Bangkok colorful lifestyle has obviously inspired many great designers with its unique forms and flavors to create chic items – a marriage of street style and runway looks – to wow audience at international couture shows.  And today (March 5, 2019) saw ace designers from Thailand and Japan share the stage at Tokyo’s ASEAN-Japan Centre (AJC) to discuss why, and how, this so-called City of Angels has finally become City of Style in Southeast Asia.

 

An insightful afternoon of Trend Talk titled “Bangkok Style @STYLE Bangkok” was organized by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with the AJC and Thai Trade Center Tokyo with the main objective to create better awareness about this premier international fair in the Japanese market.

 

According to DITP’s Director General Ms Banjongjitt Angsusingh, “STYLE Bangkok is an all-inclusive showcase of lifestyle products which underscores Thailand’s leadership position as a rich sourcing ground of diverse materials as well as the home of finest workmanship and innovative minds.  In view of the changing marketing landscape, DITP is striving more than ever to offer the world market the products from our ‘Crenovative Origin’, the quality merchandise like no other which have every answer to today’s lifestyle.”

 

Speaking about time-honored root of Thai design and its evolution through the test of time to coexist with cosmopolitan influence are distinguished guest speakers namely Thailand’s own pride, Asst Prof Eggarat Wongcharit of the Slow Hand Design fame at Salone Internazione del Mobile in Milan.  The owner/designer of Crafactor, internationally-recognized design/product studio, Wongcharit is the winner of various national and international design awards, and a celebrated curator of several successful art events.

 

Sharing with the audience their experiences working with Thai talents and manufacturers were two of Japan’s topmost names in design circle, Mr Toshiyuki Kita and Ms Ricca Tezuchi. Mr Kita is a Japanese product designer with international accolades and his many works are the permanent exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris) and Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.

 

Ricca Tezuchi, meanwhile, is the Director/Product Designer of Propeller Design.  A much sought-after designer of Japan’s great lifestyle products including Muji, she joined the judging panel of various contests including Japan’s coveted Good Design Awards and Thailand’s prestigious DEmark Award.

 

STYLE Bangkok has evolved from the three most popular international fairs namely Bangkok International Fashion Fair & Bangkok International Leather Fair (BIFF&BIL) featuring widest range of fashion products; Bangkok International Gifts and Houseware (BIG+BIH), a sourcing center of gifts, houseware and home décor; and Thailand International Furniture Fair (TIFF), a grand showcase of designer works and fine furnishing elements.
